Boeing Fined $3.1 Million for Widespread Safety Violations
Boeing's reputation took another hit this year as the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that the planemaker paid a $3.1 million fine for committing a series of safety violations.
The FAA said the fine was paid in January, after it discovered hundreds of quality system violations at Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and the 737 fuselage factory of subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas, from September 2023 through February 2024.
One notable incident involved a Boeing employee pressuring a co-worker to sign off on a 737 MAX so the company could meet its delivery schedule, despite the aircraft not meeting regulatory standards.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal called the fine inadequate, stating that for Boeing, such fines are easily absorbed as the cost of doing business, and do not serve as a meaningful deterrent to dangerous behavior.
