Boeing Hands Autonomous Flight Units to Archer Aviation in All-Stock Deal
Boeing has transferred its autonomous flight units to Archer Aviation in an all-stock deal. The transaction includes Wisk Aero's eVTOL test fleet, Insitu's $200 million annual defense drone business serving 35 nations, and SkyGrid's airspace integration software.
The deal allows Archer to build a physical AI platform using Boeing's two million flight hours of data. As part of the agreement, Boeing retains a 19.75% stake in Archer and maintains a board seat. This move is seen as Boeing shedding non-core assets to stabilize its commercial jet programs.
Travelers may see delayed urban air mobility services as development shifts to Archer. The deal's closing signals tighter capital discipline at Boeing, potentially slowing innovation in autonomous aviation until Archer proves scalability.
