Boeing Hit with $29 Million Jury Verdict Over Deadly 737 MAX Crash

A Chicago jury has awarded $29 million in damages to the family of Michael 'Mick' Ryan, an Irish-born engineer who died in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash. The lawsuit was brought against Boeing by Naoise Connolly Ryan, Mick's widow.

Mick Ryan was a UN World Food Programme employee who had worked on humanitarian missions around the world, including in Liberia during the Ebola crisis and with Rohingya refugees. He was 39 years old when he died in the crash that killed all 157 people on board.

The case is one of the final remaining civil suits against Boeing after two deadly MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 claimed 346 lives. The majority of claims have been settled out of court with undisclosed terms, but Naoise Ryan's lawyer Steven Marks had stated that she was committed to seeking accountability through a jury verdict rather than accepting money from Boeing.
