Boeing Jet Veers Off Course, Declares Emergency After Fuel Blunder

A Boeing jet operated by Azerbaijani cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines was forced to declare an emergency after it veered hundreds of miles off course in the US. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, when the plane's pilot called air traffic control (ATC) three times, signaling 'Pan-Pan' and stating that they were running out of fuel.

According to the recorded interactions between the pilot and controllers, the Boeing aircraft had only 6,000 pounds of fuel remaining when it declared 'Pan-Pan' three times over the Dallas area. This left the plane with approximately just 30 minutes of flight time.

The pilot initially requested vectors to a runway at the Houston airport, but ATC officials pointed out that the plane was several hundred miles away from its intended destination. The controller then rejected the initial request and told the pilot they didn't have enough fuel to reach Houston.

Ultimately, the crew decided to divert the plane to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) after the pilot urged ATC to offer them a 'shortcut' route to Houston. Air traffic control officials had no choice but to swiftly declare an emergency and divert the jet given the conditions.
