Boeing Lands $20 Billion Navy Contract for Next-Generation Fighter Jet
Boeing has secured a major US defense contract worth $20 billion to develop its next-generation F/A-XX fighter jet. The Navy selected Boeing over rival Northrop Grumman, beating Lockheed Martin out of contention in 2025. This latest win marks Boeing's second sixth-generation fighter victory, following the Air Force's selection of the company for its F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance fighter program in March 2025.
The F/A-XX is designed to replace the Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fleet and become a central part of future carrier air wings. The aircraft will feature advanced stealth, longer range, and improved networking capabilities, with plans to operate alongside unmanned systems like the Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Boeing expects to begin fielding the platform in the 2030s, with operation expected to continue into the 2040s.
Boeing's victory is a significant boost for the company's defense business, which could play a crucial role in its long-term recovery as it navigates production and certification challenges in its commercial aircraft division. The contract also supports Boeing's military aircraft operations around St. Louis, where some older programs are winding down.
Investors responded positively to the news, with Boeing shares climbing over 2% after the F/A-XX award was announced. This rebound came at an important moment, as Boeing stock had plunged by more than 6% just a day earlier due to delays in certification of the 737 MAX 10.
