Boeing Lands F/A-XX Contract, Boosting Carrier Air Wing Renewal
Boeing has won the contract to develop the F/A-XX fighter jet for the U.S. Navy, marking a significant step in the renewal of the carrier air wing.
The F/A-XX is a twin-engine, flying-wing aircraft with no apparent vertical tails, according to an official concept rendering released by Boeing.
The development of the F/A-XX will replace Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in the 2030s, as part of the Navy's broader carrier air wing renewal program.
The first hint of the F/A-XX project came in April 2012, when the Navy released a request for information to industry, outlining its interest in a future 'multirole strike' aircraft.
