Boeing Locks Down Apache Sustainment with $636M Contract Modification
The US Army has awarded Boeing a $636.1 million contract modification to sustain its Apache attack helicopters, bringing the cumulative value of the agreement to over $1.1 billion.
The contract modification, designated PZ0022, was announced on August 15 and will see Boeing perform depot-level airframe repair and support for the AH-64E Apache at its facility in Mesa, Arizona.
This is just one of three separate contracts awarded to Boeing in the past 13 days, solidifying its near-total monopoly on Apache sustainment. The Army has been criticized for its reliance on performance-based logistics (PBL) doctrine, which pays contractors based on readiness outcomes rather than individual parts or repair actions.
The PBL structure creates a structural condition where the government becomes progressively dependent on the contractor, making it difficult to switch suppliers in the future.
