Boeing Rolls Out Cost-Saving Landing Gear Swap for 737 MAX
Boeing and American Airlines have completed the first landing gear swap under an expanded program for the 737 MAX. The airline installed pre-overhauled gear, reducing downtime and spare parts inventory. This marks a significant development in Boeing's efforts to scale this model across its global MAX fleet soon.
The old gear was returned to Boeing’s MRO network for servicing, where it can be refurbished and reused. By using pre-overhauled gear, airlines like American Airlines can reduce aircraft ground time and eliminate the need for expensive replacement units.
Boeing plans to expand this program to MAX operators as those jets reach their maintenance sweet spot, around eight to twelve years in service. The company has already secured deals covering over 75 jets with Singapore Airlines Group, indicating a growing interest in this cost-saving initiative.
