Boeing Secures Navy Contract for Next Top Gun Fighter Jet
Boeing has secured the contract to produce the US Navy's next Top Gun fighter jet, the stealthy F/A-XX. The program aims to replace the F/A-18 Hornet and follows Boeing's win in March for the Air Force's stealth F-47.
The award was announced by the Pentagon, with few details released about the project, including projected costs, number of jets to be purchased, and operational timeline.
Aircraft analyst Richard Aboulafia described the situation as 'one of those contests where it doesn't matter if you're the loser.' He added that both Boeing and Northrop Grumman have 'very full plates' with ongoing projects.
Boeing's win raises concerns about its ability to manage an adequate workforce for both programs, according to former Congressional Research Service analyst J.J. Gertler. He noted that execution depends on having enough experienced engineers, production workers, and technicians.
