Boeing Secures Second Major Fighter Jet Contract in Two Years

Boeing has secured its second major fighter jet contract in as many years, positioning itself as a key player in the next generation of US military aircraft. The company recently won the US Navy’s F/A-XX fighter contract, worth over $20 billion in its initial phase, following its victory in the Air Force’s F-47 program last year. Industry experts attribute Boeing’s success to its long-term investment in carrier-based jets, a design approach that aligns with the Pentagon’s demand for easily upgradable aircraft, and the use of advanced digital design tools.

The Pentagon required competitors Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman to adhere to common design standards for easier upgrades and modifications. Boeing’s embrace of these standards, along with its digital tools, set it apart. Northrop Grumman, which offered a digitally advanced fighter, has requested a debriefing on the selection process. However, winning the contracts does not guarantee financial success for Boeing, as past fixed-price development programs have led to significant losses.

Boeing has faced costly overruns and delays in programs like the KC-46 tanker and Starliner spacecraft. The company’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, has stated that Boeing will avoid similar fixed-price contracts in the future. The F-47 is expected to fly in 2028 and enter service in 2029, while the F/A-XX is projected to enter service in the 2030s, potentially replacing the Navy’s F/A-18 fleet. The production of these aircraft could generate hundreds of billions of dollars over their lifetimes.

After losing the F-35 contract to Lockheed Martin in 2001, Boeing maintained its engineering expertise through classified projects and upgrades to the F-15 and F/A-18. The company has invested billions in new production facilities and digital design tools, aiming to secure its position in the next generation of US fighter jets. Boeing’s strategy of developing two advanced fighters in parallel is seen as a way to lower risks due to shared technologies and design features.
