Boeing Shares Dip as Netflix Documentary Renews Scrutiny on Safety Approach
Boeing shares dipped 0.47% to $222.01 on Wednesday, following the release of a Netflix documentary that puts scrutiny on Boeing's approach to safety and its handling of whistleblowers.
The film, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, includes fresh testimony from those within the company and focuses on company culture, supervisory practices, and response to safety alerts. Boeing challenged certain allegations in comments cited on Wednesday, stating that some claims 'remain unfounded' and that problems had been resolved or are still being improved.
Despite the renewed focus on Boeing's reputation, trading activity was subdued, with volume coming in 21% under its typical level. The modest movement in share price reflects progress in operations, including a record backlog of $715 billion and second-quarter earnings that showed revenue increasing by 8% to $24.56 billion.
Analysts remain positive on Boeing, with 22 out of 28 monitored suggesting buying shares, six advocating holding, and none recommending selling. The consensus price target of $274.85 represents an estimated 23.8% upside to Wednesday's closing price.
