Boeing Slips 777X Certification Timeline into 2024 Amid Technical Issues and Labor Disputes
The Boeing 777X certification timeline has slipped into next year due to ongoing technical issues and labor disputes. According to CEO Kelly Ortberg, the certification flight testing of the 777-9 will likely wrap up early in 2024, with deliveries expected in 2027.
Ortberg pointed out that Boeing is still working on securing ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operations performance standards) authorization for the aircraft, which is critical for long-haul flights. The airframer has yet to secure this authorization due to issues related to the mid-seal of the GE9X engine.
GE Aerospace's chief financial officer, Rahul Ghai, acknowledged that there were problems with the mid-seal's durability but stated that Boeing and GE are working together to resolve the issue. He added that a new design for the mid-seal has already been shipped to Boeing and is expected to be certified by the FAA in the next few months.
The 777X certification program faces additional challenges with looming labor action, as members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees (SPEEA) are considering a strike. A walkout would significantly impact Boeing's certification efforts and potentially delay production.
