Boeing Staff Prepare for Strike Action Over Rejected Contract Offer
Thousands of Boeing staff members are gearing up to go on strike if contract negotiations between union representatives and the planemaker fail to yield significant improvements. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) said that a majority of its Boeing union members rejected a new four-year contract offer presented earlier this month.
The proposal, which was voted down by 64% of professional unit members and 71% of technical unit members, has left the union with little confidence in Boeing's leadership. According to SPEEA, thousands of its members continue to harbor 'deep mistrust' towards Boeing leaders due to past experiences such as job erosion, offshoring, and salary stagnation.
The union is now seeking a new offer that addresses these concerns and has sent out a survey to its members to gauge their expectations. If negotiations fail to yield substantial improvements, the union has authorized industrial action, with almost 90% of members from both sectors giving their approval.
