Boeing Tackles Growing GNSS RFI Issue with Three-Phased Strategy
Boeing has developed a three-phased strategy to address the growing issue of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), which affects commercial air travel. The company's goal is to mitigate the impacts of GNSS RFI on its aircraft, leveraging the GPS Event Monitor (GEM) system.
The GEM system logs details about RFI symptoms and where the aircraft was located when the symptoms occurred. Boeing has worked closely with operators to collect data related to GNSS RFI and share information and recommendations for flight and maintenance crews in various forums.
The company's phased approach includes containment, improvement, and resilience phases. In the containment phase, Boeing analyzes reports of operator experiences to understand the kinds of RFI events seen in the field. The GEM system automatically gathers data on adverse GPS events and creates automated reports that are sent back to Boeing for further analysis.
