Boeing Taps Former Spirit AeroSystems Exec to Lead Next-Gen Plane Development

Boeing is focusing on developing an 'industrial blueprint' for its next new commercial plane. The company has assigned Sean Black, a former Spirit AeroSystems executive, to lead this effort as its new vice president of BCA Future Production System. Black will be instrumental in shaping the production system alongside the airplane design, ensuring a seamless transition from engineering to manufacturing.

Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing's commercial airplanes division, made the announcement as part of three leadership changes within the company. The changes reflect Boeing's continuous improvement and progress on certifying key development programs, including the MAX 10 and 777X family. In August, the Federal Aviation Administration certified Boeing's smallest MAX variant, the MAX 7.

Boeing has been reluctant to put a firm timeline on launching its next all-new clean-sheet plane, but CEO Kelly Ortberg expects the company will have financial stability to introduce it in the next few years. The industry has been waiting for both Boeing and Airbus to launch their next new planes, with Airbus expecting to launch its narrowbody program by 2030.
