Boeing to Triple Guidance Seeker Production for Patriot Missiles
Boeing has secured a major seven-year contract worth approximately $14.7 billion from Lockheed Martin to expand the production of guidance seekers for the PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) missiles. These guidance seekers are critical components of the Patriot air defense system, enabling the interception of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as aircraft. The contract will allow Boeing to triple its production capacity for these components, addressing rising global demand.
The PAC-3 MSE is a kinetic-hit-to-kill interceptor used in the Patriot system, which has seen increased usage due to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. This has led to a significant depletion of U.S. weapons stockpiles, prompting the U.S. Army to sign a $58.6 billion contract with Lockheed Martin in July to boost PAC-3 missile production. The broader initiative, initiated under the Trump administration, prioritizes weapons production over shareholder payments.
However, industry representatives have cautioned that Congress has not yet allocated funding for these agreements. Without this funding, contractors may struggle to make large-scale investments in components and production capacity, potentially delaying the expansion efforts.
