Boeing Under Fire: New Documentary Exposes Safety Scandals and Corporate Malfeasance
Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy's new Netflix film 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing' is a follow-up to her 2022 documentary 'Downfall: The Case Against Boeing'. This time, she explores the aerospace company's approach to airplane manufacturing over the past two decades from the perspective of whistleblowers. The film was sparked by the death of former Boeing employee and whistleblower John Barnett, who died in February 2024 while testifying in a lawsuit against the company.
Kennedy had interviewed Barnett for 'Downfall' and kept in touch with him after its release. She says that after his death, several whistleblowers contacted her to express their concerns about Boeing's safety practices and the need for further investigation. The film features interviews with past and current Boeing employees, as well as journalists who have covered the company's scandals.
'Freefall' chronicles efforts by the families of the victims of the 737 MAX crashes to hold Boeing and its executives criminally liable. The film also shows undercover footage inside the Dreamliner factory, where factory workers discuss their concerns about flying on 787 aircraft, including the one they make themselves. Kennedy herself avoids flying on 737 MAX and 787 aircraft when booking her travel.
Boeing has responded to the film by stating that it has worked to address some of the issues raised in 'Freefall' and that the company is committed to safety and quality. However, Kennedy argues that more needs to be done to regulate corporations like Boeing and ensure public safety.
