Boeing Whistleblower's Death Ignites Safety Concerns Exposed by Netflix Doc
A new documentary series on Netflix titled 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing' has shed light on safety concerns within the aerospace giant. The series, a follow-up to its 2022 film 'Downfall: The Case Against Boeing', examines events that occurred after the two Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019.
The central figure of the documentary is John Barnett, a former quality manager at Boeing who worked on the 787 Dreamliner project. During his tenure from 1985 to 2017, Barnett raised concerns about manufacturing practices, including metal debris near flight control wiring, incomplete records, missing parts, and pressure to meet production schedules.
Barnett also conducted tests that suggested emergency oxygen systems might not function if installed incorrectly. He filed complaints with the FAA and OSHA in 2017 but later took his life while testifying in a lawsuit against Boeing in 2024.
The documentary features interviews with other Boeing employees who corroborate Barnett's claims, including Roy Irvin, a quality investigator, who stated that more people needed to speak up. Merle Meyers, a former quality manager, alleged that scrapped parts were taken and reinstalled on aircraft over several years, causing safety concerns.
