Boeing Wins $20 Billion+ Contract for Next-Gen US Navy Fighter
The US Navy has awarded Boeing a contract worth over $20 billion to develop the F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter, which aims to extend the carrier strike reach in the Pacific. The programme is designed to prioritize long-range surface attack in contested environments and will augment and eventually replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornets in the 2030s.
The F/A-XX will have a range of approximately 25 percent greater than the F-35C, but its exact performance capabilities are classified. The programme's urgency is driven by the need for aircraft that can operate with impunity in contested airspace, as described by Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle.
Boeing's parallel ownership of the F/A-XX and F-47 programmes creates opportunities for shared industrial expertise, but also increases the strategic consequences of any shortages or issues affecting engineering talent, suppliers, or manufacturing capacity.
