Boeing Wins $20 Billion Contract for US Navy's Next-Generation Fighter Jet
The US Navy has awarded Boeing a contract worth over $20 billion to build its next-generation fighter jet, the F/A-XX. The development contract will produce test aircraft and is expected to grow to hundreds of billions of dollars over its lifetime.
The F/A-XX will replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet, which Boeing also builds, and will be designed to be stealthy, fly farther, and work with uncrewed aircraft. It will also be capable of flying alongside the Lockheed Martin F-35C.
The award is Boeing's second sixth-generation fighter in two years, following its selection for the F-47 by the Air Force in 2025. Some Pentagon officials had sought to delay the Navy jet by up to three years due to engineering and supply-chain capacity concerns, but Congress pushed back and funded the programme.
