Boeing Wins $20 Billion U.S. Navy Contract for Next-Generation F/A-XX Fighter
The U.S. Navy has selected Boeing to develop its next-generation F/A-XX carrier-based fighter, awarding the aerospace company a contract valued at more than $20 billion for the full-scale development phase of one of the Pentagon's most closely watched combat-aircraft programs.
The award calls for Boeing to develop the Navy's sixth-generation strike fighter and produce multiple test aircraft for ground, airworthiness, systems, and weapons-integration testing. The F/A-XX is being developed under the Navy's Next Generation Air Dominance program and is intended eventually to replace the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and assume capabilities now provided by the EA-18G Growler.
The selection gives Boeing responsibility for developing the next generation of tactical fighters for both major U.S. military aviation services: the company was selected in March 2025 to develop the U.S. Air Force's F-47 under that service's separate Next Generation Air Dominance program.
