Boeing Workers Reject Contract Offer Amid Concerns Over Quality and Safety

Boeing workers have rejected their contract offer at a critical time for the company. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), which represents 17,000 employees at Boeing's facilities in Washington and nearby states, voted to reject the deal on Friday.

The union pointed out that Boeing management has made past decisions that moved engineering work out of Washington, prioritized speedy production over quality and safety, and failed to keep up with inflation. The current executive leadership appears to be making efforts to correct these mistakes, but the membership remains skeptical.

Boeing's vice president and functional chief engineer for production engineering, Ben Nimmergut, said the company is 'disappointed' in the vote and has no choice but to implement its contingency plan. He stated that Boeing has a responsibility to its workforce and customers to maintain momentum despite the potential strike.

The rejected contract offer included a 3% general wage increase this year, followed by yearly increases of 6% and 5% respectively in the following years. The union's negotiating team had unanimously endorsed the deal, but a group representing the tech unit recommended rejecting it due to concerns over performance-based metrics.
