February 8th, 2010 marked a significant milestone for Boeing as its new 747-8 Freighter took to the skies for the first time. Over 5,000 employees, customers, suppliers, and community leaders gathered in Everett, Washington to witness the historic event.

The aircraft, weighing 421,200 pounds empty, was commanded by Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein and Captain Tom Imrich as it lifted off from Paine Field runway at 12:39 p.m. local time. The flight plan included tests for basic handling qualities and engine performance, which were successfully completed.

The 747-8 Freighter boasts several key improvements over its predecessor, the 747-400. Its new wing design provides 16 percent more cargo volume due to an additional 18.3 feet in length. The aircraft's four General Electric GEnx-2B engines also produce lower emissions and better fuel economy, resulting in a 16 percent reduction in ton-mile costs.

Boeing currently has 76 orders for the 747-8 Freighter and 32 orders for its passenger version, the 747-8 Intercontinental. The success of this maiden flight is expected to drive demand for the new aircraft.
