Boeing's $75 Million JDAM LR Contract Aims to Bridge Precision Strike Gap
The US Air Force has awarded Boeing a $75 million contract to begin producing the GBU-75 Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range (JDAM LR), which can carry a 500-pound-class payload more than 300 nautical miles. This new weapon combines existing technology with a compact turbojet engine and folding wing system, making it an affordable option for precision strikes.
The JDAM LR is not intended to replace expensive cruise missiles like JASSM or LRASM, but rather offers a middle ground between glide bombs and premium weapons. It can be used in various configurations, including maritime-strike and mine-delivery versions.
The production of the JDAM LR is significant because it addresses the shortage of long-range precision weapons in the US military's inventory, which has been depleted due to recent conflicts. The Pentagon aims to rebuild its magazines with increased procurement of critical munitions, such as Tomahawk and JASSM missiles.
