Boeing's 777-9 Faces Headaches Over Early Production Batches

Airline giants Emirates and Lufthansa are expressing reservations about taking delivery of early production batches of Boeing's new wide-body aircraft, the 777-9.

The issue affects around 30 planes manufactured between 2019 and 2021, which no longer meet current production standards. Emirates has already refused to accept ten aircraft from this batch, while Lufthansa is negotiating exclusion and financial compensation for potentially acquired planes.

The problems stem from delays in the certification process, which led to changes in design details, system architectures, and software versions. Retrofitting these early-built planes to the final production standard would require significant technical and financial effort, with potential costs including adapting wiring, control software, and cabin interfaces to current aviation safety regulations.

Lufthansa's CEO Carsten Spohr announced that the airline is negotiating with Boeing to determine which of the affected aircraft can be excluded from delivery. For those planes whose acceptance remains a possibility, Lufthansa is demanding extensive modernization measures from the manufacturer, as well as financial concessions to offset remaining depreciation and maintenance risks.

The first delivery of the Boeing 777-9 to Lufthansa was originally scheduled for 2020 but has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2027. This would mean a total delay of seven years compared to the original contracts.
