Boeing's 777-9 Launch Delayed by GE9X Engine Mid-Seal Problem
Boeing's plans to launch its 777-9 aircraft have been delayed due to a mid-seal problem in the GE9X engine, which requires an ETOPS certification plan before the FAA will approve its flight-test program. The company aims for the 777-9 to enter service with a 180-minute ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) certification.
Boeing needs to fix the mid-seal issue on the GE9X engine, which is manufactured by General Electric Aerospace. According to Boeing, it intends for the 777-9 to enter service with the desired 180-minute ETOPS certification. Jennifer Buchanan, a Seattle Times reporter, had previously reported that Boeing's goal was to achieve this level of certification.
Without the mid-seal fix certification plan in place, the FAA will not approve its ETOPS flight-test program. This is likely to delay the launch of the 777-9, which has been expected to enter service soon.
