Boeing's Delayed 777-9 Fleet: A Logistical Nightmare

The Boeing 777-9 was initially supposed to enter service in 2020 but has been delayed until 2027. In the meantime, Boeing has built around 30 completed airframes before certification.

The delay is due to an unusually long gap between early production and certification. Boeing continued assembling 777-9s while the program moved through design changes, flight testing, and a more demanding FAA certification process following the Boeing 737 MAX accidents.

The result is a fleet of aircraft built at different stages of the program, with older examples requiring more extensive work. CEO Kelly Ortberg said that the process will take several years and has created a dedicated team for the task.
