Boeing's Folding Wingtips Revolutionize Air Travel
The Boeing 777X features an innovative wing design that allows it to bend and flex in turbulent air, reducing drag and fuel consumption. The long, slender composite wing is made up of carbon-fibre materials, which can spring back into shape after being bent.
This 'unconstrained' wing design was chosen by Boeing to reduce the impact of turbulence on passengers and crew. By allowing the wing to bend and absorb gusts, the 777X can fly more efficiently and smoothly.
However, this unique design comes with a catch - the wingspan is too wide for standard airport gates, requiring the development of folding wingtips. These tips fold up automatically when the aircraft slows below taxi speed, reducing the wingspan to around 65 metres.
The Boeing 777X has undergone rigorous testing, including loading the wing beyond its maximum load in ground tests. The aircraft's designers pushed the wing to its limits, breaking one wing on purpose to ensure that it would not fail in service.
