Boeing's Grey Wolf Helicopter Program Reaches Full-Rate Production Amid Delays and Fleet Cuts
Boeing has finally reached full-rate production of its MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters after years of delays and significant reductions in the planned fleet. The company announced on Thursday that it had received an order for four additional Grey Wolves, bringing the total number of aircraft under contract to 42.
The U.S. Air Force declared initial operational capability for the helicopter in August, marking a major milestone for the program. The Grey Wolf is designed to replace the UH-1N Huey and will primarily be used for missions protecting the Air Force's Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile fields.
Boeing developed the military version of the AW139 from Leonardo, with modifications requiring additional Federal Aviation Administration approval contributing to delays in certification and testing. The program has faced significant setbacks, including a reduction in the planned fleet from 80 aircraft to 42 due to budget cuts.
