Boeing’s P-8I Aircraft Celebrates 15 Years with Indian Navy
Boeing celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Indian Navy’s P-8I first flight on September 28, 2026. The P-8I, a variant of the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon, was developed specifically for India’s needs. The aircraft features unique systems like a magnetic anomaly detector and an AN/APS-143 OceanEye radar, along with components supplied by Indian companies. This collaboration supported India’s aerospace and defense industry growth and the “Make in India” initiative.
The first P-8I flight took place on September 28, 2011, from Renton Field in Washington, lasting two hours and 31 minutes. Test pilots verified aircraft systems, engine performance, and autopilot functions during this maiden voyage. The successful flight paved the way for further mission systems installation and testing, including weapons certification using inert weapon shapes. Boeing delivered the first aircraft to India in 2013, completing the initial order of eight aircraft by 2015, with an option for four more.
The P-8I has been instrumental in maritime patrol and reconnaissance missions, as well as humanitarian and disaster relief operations. Notably, the aircraft was reportedly targeted by a guided missile during the 2025 conflict, with its self-protection system neutralizing the threat. India’s positive experience with the fleet has sparked interest in acquiring additional P-8I aircraft, with a formal government decision reported in February 2026, though an order has not been confirmed.
