Boeing's Spirit Acquisition Costs Skyrocket by $455M

Boeing's acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems is turning out to be more costly than initially anticipated. The aerospace giant estimates that fulfilling customer deals inherited from Spirit will cost $455 million more than initially calculated, bringing the total burden to $1.52 billion. This represents a 43% increase over Boeing's initial estimate at the end of December 2025.

The additional costs come as Boeing ramps up aircraft deliveries, with figures showing that the company had delivered 418 aircraft through August 2026, compared to 385 in the same period last year. However, August deliveries fell to 51 from 53 in July, with a notable decline in 787 handovers.

Boeing's CFO Jay Malave previously warned about the expense of bringing Spirit into Boeing, stating that higher-than-expected costs had pushed the commercial-airplane division's expected return to profitability into 2027. The company has not identified which customers or aircraft programs account for the $455 million increase.
