Boeing's Troubled Starliner Takes Center Stage as SpaceX Retires Crew Dragon

Boeing's CST-100 Starliner program is facing significant challenges in its development, and recent news from SpaceX has put even more pressure on the troubled spacecraft. According to a recent podcast interview with SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell, the company plans to retire its Crew Dragon by 2030, leaving Boeing's Starliner as potentially the only option for crewed LEO flights post-2030.

Shotwell made pointed comments towards Boeing, stating that the company has been paid more than SpaceX to develop their human capsule and should 'fly their capsule' instead of relying on Crew Dragon. This comes after NASA announced a $946 million contract with SpaceX for three additional crewed missions to the International Space Station through 2030.

Boeing's Starliner program has been plagued by issues, including four distinct hardware anomalies documented in the investigation report NASA released in February. The next flight, Starliner-1, was initially intended to be a crewed mission but was modified to a cargo-only mission due to the ongoing problems with the spacecraft.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has stated that they will not fly another crew on Starliner until the technical causes are corrected and the propulsion system is fully qualified. The current status of the repairs is not yet public, but NASA has expressed concerns about the unrealistic timeline for the next flight, which may slip to 2027.
