Brazilian Farmer and Startup Team Up to Save Amazon

Ademar Bedin, a Brazilian farmer, has agreed to preserve 6,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest. The area is roughly the size of San Francisco and would have been cleared for soybean farming. However, a Sao Paulo-based startup, ZEG, convinced him to leave the forest intact.

ZEG is piloting a way to bolster the integrity and sales of forest carbon offsets. The project aims to create a sustainable revenue stream for preserving forests. By doing so, it may demonstrate that saving the Amazon can be profitable.

The project's success hinges on the certification process for carbon credits. ZEG must ensure that the preserved forest meets strict environmental standards. If successful, the project could set an example for other farmers and companies in the region to follow suit.
