Brin Spends $100M to Block California Wealth Tax

Google co-founder Sergey Brin is spending $100 million to defeat California's proposed wealth tax, which would charge billionaires like him a 5% tax on their total assets. This seems like a significant investment for Brin, who stands to lose nearly $14 billion under the tax, but it may be a necessary one given his net worth of around $270 billion.

Brin is not alone in opposing the tax; a group called Building a Better California has also received millions from other wealthy Californians, including venture capitalist Peter Thiel and John Doerr, chairman of Kleiner Perkins. This coalition has reserved nearly $100 million in ad time to convince voters to reject the tax.

The proponents of the wealth tax argue that it is necessary to address a shortfall of around $20 billion per year due to federal funding cuts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. They estimate that the tax could raise up to $100 billion, which would cover the shortfall for about five years.
