Broad-Based IBBQ Tops Concentrated Rivals in Biotech Sector
The biotech sector has two distinct approaches for investors to choose from: spread risk across hundreds of drug developers or concentrate capital in industry leaders. The Invesco Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBBQ) and the VanEck Biotech ETF (BBH) exemplify these strategies, with IBBQ tracking a 251-stock index and BBH following a 25-name benchmark.
A key difference between the two is their expense ratios: IBBQ charges 0.19%, while BBH costs 0.35%. In contrast, the Invesco Biotechnology & Genome ETF (PBE), which holds 31 names, has an expense ratio of 0.58%. On the income side, PBE offers a 1.73% yield, more than double IBBQ's 0.80%, although its higher fee comes with added concentration risk.
IBBQ is actually more top-heavy than expected, as its three largest positions - Amgen (AMGN), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX), and Gilead Sciences (GILD) - account for approximately 24% of fund assets. In contrast, PBE's top three holdings represent only about 16%. BBH takes concentration to the extreme, with nearly 38% of its assets in just three stocks: Amgen, Gilead Sciences, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.
A five-year comparison shows that IBBQ has outpaced BBH, despite both funds weathering comparable drawdowns. This structural gap reflects the reality of drug development, where clinical trial failures can erase billions in market value overnight. By holding 251 positions, IBBQ cushions against unpredictable losers, while BBH carries genuine company-specific risk.
