Brothers Repurpose Abandoned Boeing 727 as Community Hangout
On El Paso's East Side, two brothers are transforming an abandoned Boeing 727 into a unique community hangout. John and Ismael Lara, both educators, purchased the decommissioned aircraft through a government surplus auction for $10,000, or according to another report, $2,000.
The plane had spent over two decades at El Paso International Airport before being put up for sale. The brothers plan to reassemble it on their private property and have already made significant progress, with one-third of the aircraft's length, including the cockpit, removed and transported to the site by late May.
The project is not only an effort to repurpose a derelict object but also aims to teach children and adults about airplanes, aerodynamics, and force and motion. The brothers have considered various ideas for what the finished aircraft could become, including a food-truck park, party venue, short-term rental, event space, and restaurant.
However, before they can open their 'Hangar Hangout', the Laras need to obtain necessary permits from the City of El Paso Planning & Inspections Department. The project's timeline is uncertain, with estimates suggesting that it may be completed by summer 2027.
