Buenos Aires Times Publisher Sues OpenAI and Microsoft Over ChatGPT Copyright Infringement

The Buenos Aires Times publisher, Editorial Perfil, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for allegedly using their journalistic content in ChatGPT without permission.

This is not the first time a major AI firm has been sued over copyright infringement. In 2023, The New York Times launched a similar case, followed by Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo in 2025, resulting in a content licensing agreement earlier this year.

The lawsuit claims that OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT has accessed and replicated Editorial Perfil's historical content, including news articles, without permission. The company also alleges that the AI firm is engaging in unfair competition by using its oligopolistic position to their detriment.

OpenAI has signed a content licensing agreement with Grupo Prisa, the Spanish group behind El País daily, but not with Editorial Perfil. This strategy may be an attempt to limit potential legal and regulatory risks associated with copyright infringement claims from powerful media groups like Grupo Prisa.
