Burger King Gains Ground as McDonald's Struggles to Hold Value Menu Customers
McDonald's is facing pressure from low-income diners who are increasingly opting for value-conscious options. The chain saw a decline of 2.4% in spending by low-income guests, equating to about $310 million in lost sales, according to Numerator. This marks the first quarterly drop in that customer group for McDonald's in the past year.
Burger King, on the other hand, recorded a small gain of 0.3% in low-income guest spending during the same period. The shift highlights Burger King's success in attracting price-sensitive diners as McDonald's struggles with inconsistent execution of its value menu priced at $3 or less.
McDonald's U.S. comparable sales growth slowed to 0.8% in Q2, underperforming value-focused competitors like Burger King and Chili's amid price-sensitive consumer behavior. CEO Chris Kempczinski acknowledged issues with rolling out the latest value menu on an earnings call earlier this month, stating that the company has restored its overall value and affordability leadership but faces inconsistent restaurant-level execution.
