Burke's Immigration Package Faces High Stakes as Australia Targets Net Migration
Immigration Minister Tony Burke is set to announce his package of measures to tighten immigration policy, following Treasury forecasts that aim to reduce net migration. The Government has publicly committed to reaching a target of 245,000 in 2026-27 and 225,000 in 2027-28.
The package will need to demonstrate its ability to reduce net migration without causing negative or unintended consequences, be cost-effective, and address the massive backlogs in temporary entry stocks. It must also start addressing the unsustainable stock of student visa holders, working holiday makers, partner visa applicants, and asylum seekers.
According to data.gov.au, the number of bridging visa holders has increased significantly since 2015, reaching just under 400,000 before COVID. The temporary graduate stock is also unsustainable, as a large portion of these will be seeking permanent residence places, which are limited.
