C-5M Super Galaxy vs Airbus A380: A Tale of Two Aviation Giants
The Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy and the Airbus A380 are two of the largest aircraft ever built, but they serve different purposes. The C-5M is the largest transport aircraft for the United States Air Force, while the A380 is the largest passenger aircraft ever built. Both aircraft were designed during a time when the aerospace industry believed in the trend of progressively larger aircraft for increased capacity. However, this trend did not continue, with the Air Force opting for smaller aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster III, and the A380 proving less popular than smaller twin-engined aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Looking at the dimensions, the C-5M Super Galaxy is longer than the A380, measuring 247.8 feet in length compared to the A380's 239.5 feet. However, the A380 has a larger wingspan (261.8 feet vs 247.8 feet), height (79.1 feet vs 65.0 feet), and fuselage width. The A380's wider fuselage is better suited for carrying passengers, while the C-5M's narrower fuselage is designed for outsized cargo. Despite its smaller dimensions, the C-5M boasts more than five times the cargo space volume of the A380, with 34,000 cubic feet compared to the A380's 6,190 cubic feet.
In terms of payload, the C-5M Super Galaxy can carry a maximum of 280,000 lbs, enabling it to transport large cargo such as two M1 Abrams main battle tanks or six AH-64 Apache attack helicopters. The A380, primarily designed as a passenger aircraft, has a maximum payload of around 185,000 lbs. The proposed freighter variant of the A380, the A380F, was planned to have a maximum payload of 330,000 lbs but was never built. The C-5M's original design had a maximum payload of 270,000 lbs, but structural issues like wing cracks sometimes limited its payload to as low as 50,000 lbs during peacetime missions in the 1970s.
