C.J. Ray Jr., Devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Passes Away at 85
Clifford Jardine 'C.J.' Ray Jr., an 85-year-old devoted husband, loving father, and proud granddaddy, passed away on September 4, 2026, in his hometown of Denmark, South Carolina. A lifelong resident of the area, C.J. spent most of his life working as a successful entrepreneur and commercial fisherman.
He proudly owned and operated the Denmark Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where he was fiercely loyal to the brand - Pepsi products simply weren't an option. In addition to his business ventures, C.J. took great pride in his family's farm, Ray Farms, which produced some of the finest cantaloupes and watermelons in the region.
C.J.'s love for the outdoors was evident throughout his life. He spent countless hours fishing on the Savannah River and hunting deer, ducks, doves, and quail. His passion for sharing this love with others led him to mentor many young boys through hunting and fishing trips, teaching them valuable skills and lessons about patience, respect, and appreciation for the outdoors.
A faithful Christian and longtime member of Denmark Presbyterian Church until its closing in 2021, C.J.'s faith and generosity were evident in his commitment to his community. His family will deeply miss him and fondly remember his stories, humor, loyalty, love of the outdoors, competitive spirit, and the way he could make any day memorable.
