California Man Charged with Smuggling $300M in Nvidia Chips to China
A California man has been arrested and charged with violating export controls, smuggling, and money laundering for allegedly smuggling $300 million in Nvidia chips to China.
The US government has strict regulations on exporting advanced semiconductor chips to China due to the country's rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. It is illegal to export these chips without a license, which was previously blocked by President Joe Biden's administration but allowed by President Donald Trump last year.
Nvidia's chips are highly sought after for use in AI data centers because of their ability to perform multiple calculations simultaneously and their widely compatible software stack.
The suspect, Yiu Kong Lui, 38, allegedly worked with several co-conspirators who operated shell companies to first get the chips to either Malaysia or Singapore, and then into China. He lied to US companies about where the chips were headed, claiming they wouldn't end up in China.
Liu's company was paid over $180 million by Malaysian shipping companies to broker the chip deals, which began in 2023 and continued until August. If convicted of all charges, Liu could face a combined 50 years in prison.
