California Startup JetZero Aims to Revolutionize Air Travel with Blended-Wing Plane Design
A startup called JetZero is pushing to create a new kind of plane that's more fuel-efficient and could change the industry. The company, based in California, aims to fly its prototype next year and carry paying passengers by the 2030s.
The concept, known as blended-wing design, has been studied for decades but never implemented due to technical challenges and high costs. JetZero's CEO Tom O'Leary says that technology has finally caught up, allowing them to build a plane with an entire body generating lift instead of just the wings.
This design change could make planes more efficient and reduce emissions and fuel costs. However, the road to getting passengers on board is long and challenging. JetZero needs to prove its concept works as promised, meets safety standards, can be built at scale without breaking the bank, and doesn't run out of money.
JetZero has already raised over $320 million in funding and broken ground on a massive manufacturing facility that could rival Boeing's Everett factory. The company plans to build 20 planes per month once it reaches full capacity.
