Canada's Digital Dependence Exposed by Trump's 'Lake America' Push
The recent push by U.S. President Donald Trump to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' has highlighted Canada's reliance on U.S.-owned tech giants, including Google and Apple.
Tech industry experts say that Canadian consumers and businesses have few non-U.S. options for navigation and digital services, with some describing the situation as a monopoly.
The change to 'Lake America' was implemented by Google Maps, but some Canadian websites, including government sites and major banks, displayed the altered name due to their use of third-party protocols that pull data from Google's U.S. API.
Anne Pasek, Canada Research Chair in Media, Culture and the Environment at Trent University, stated that 'Canadians really do live under the shadow of American tech monopolies, and we often forget that this is a fact until there are these moments of controversy.'
