Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Shows Promise Beyond Melanoma
A breakthrough cancer vaccine trial has shown promise in reducing mortality and metastasis of melanoma, a deadly skin cancer. The Phase 3 trial was conducted by Moderna and Merck, with results indicating the vaccine's effectiveness in priming the immune system to attack tumor cells.
Catherine Wu, a Harvard Medical School professor of medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is optimistic that this technology will be effective against cancers beyond melanoma. Her team pioneered the approach, which involves identifying and targeting tumor-specific proteins called neoantigens.
The vaccine's personalized nature, tailored to each patient's unique genetic profile, was a key factor in its success. Wu notes that her team had to disrupt traditional manufacturing processes to make frequent small quantities of the vaccine for individual patients.
