Carney Courts Global Investors as Trade War Bites
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto this week to attract global investors and reduce the country's economic dependence on the United States. The summit brings together over 300 CEOs and senior executives from top investment firms, managing more than $120 trillion in assets.
Carney, a former head of the Bank of England and Goldman Sachs executive, is betting that Canada's vast energy resources, highly educated workforce, and trade agreements will make it an attractive destination for foreign investors. He pointed out that investors are coming to Canada on its own merits, not just because of its proximity to the US.
Carney will meet separately with the CEOs of Macquarie Group and Temasek Holdings to court capital. The summit is seen as a critical moment for Canada, which has been affected by trade tensions with the US. Despite concerns that Trump's tariffs would keep investors away, Carney is urging global investors to look past the trade war and make a bigger bet on Canada.
