Port Authority Honors 9/11 Victims as World Trade Center Redevelopment Continues
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey marked the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by honoring its employees who lost their lives. Kathryn Garcia, executive director, said that the agency's redevelopment efforts have transformed the World Trade Center campus over the past two and a half decades.
The site now features more than 12 million square feet of office and cultural space, expanded public greenery, and the Oculus transit hub. Construction is underway on Two World Trade Center, which will serve as the new global headquarters for American Express when it opens in 2031.
Garcia noted that American Express also lost employees on 9/11 and has chosen to relocate its headquarters to the site as an important way to honor that history. The company plans to bring around 10,000 workers to the tower, which will feature elevated green terraces along Greenwich Street.
