CAT Surges on Record Backlog and Strong Q2 Earnings

Caterpillar (CAT) has delivered a strong Q2 performance, exceeding investor expectations. The company reported a 17% increase in Power & Energy sales to $8.238 billion and a 35% rise in Construction Industries sales to $8.346 billion.

The record backlog of $63 billion and all-time high quarterly orders have bolstered management's optimistic outlook for 2026, driven by sustained end-market demand. This quarter's results suggest that CAT is effectively converting its substantial backlog and order momentum into revenue growth and increased profitability.

Management is aggressively expanding large reciprocating engine capacity, aiming for nearly triple the production levels of 2024, supported by a 3.5x increase in large-engine backlog since early 2024. The adjusted operating profit margin has increased to 21.9% from 17.6% year-over-year.

Despite strong results, management anticipates Resource Industries margins will face pressure from rising manufacturing costs and ongoing capacity expansion may limit incremental margin leverage within Power & Energy.
