Caterpillar Earnings Test Awaits Amid AI Fears and Oversupply Concerns
Caterpillar's AI-fueled stock rally is facing its next major test as it prepares to release its earnings report on Tuesday. The company has seen its shares surge by 42% so far this year and nearly 125% since late 2024, thanks in part to the growing demand for power equipment driven by artificial intelligence.
However, recent reports have raised concerns about future AI infrastructure spending, leading to a pullback in shares of several industrial suppliers. Vertiv Holdings Co., GE Vernova Inc., and Innio NV all saw significant declines after releasing their quarterly results, with some analysts citing worries over oversupply in the power-equipment market.
Despite these challenges, some investors remain bullish on Caterpillar's prospects, citing the company's strong construction and mining equipment businesses. Oppenheimer analyst Kristen Owen noted that consensus estimates are understating momentum in these areas, while Joe Tigay's Rational Equity Armor Fund owns Caterpillar shares and sees the stock as a good opportunity.
However, others are more cautious, with Empower's chief investment strategist Marta Norton warning that the upside is already priced into the stock and that any weakness could be significant. The company's valuation, currently trading at around 29 times projected forward earnings, also raises concerns about its sustainability.
