Caterpillar Stock Valuation Skyrockets Amid Construction Boom
Caterpillar Inc.'s (NYSE:CAT) stock has surged by 37% year-to-date, but investors are paying a premium to buy in. The company trades at almost 25x forward earnings, surpassing its sector median of 22.14x and its own five-year average of 20.28x.
Caterpillar's latest results show strong demand remaining in the construction industry. In the second quarter, sales and revenues rose 24% year over year to $20.5 billion, while adjusted profit per share jumped 73% to $8.17.
The company's order backlog also reached approximately $72.1 billion at the end of June, up 15% from the previous quarter. Caterpillar is diversifying its revenue streams beyond construction, with power generation for data centers becoming an increasingly important segment.
While construction remains healthy, the growth in data-center infrastructure could provide a structural source of demand for Caterpillar's power-generation equipment. The company expects this growth to be driven by increasing energy demand linked to cloud computing and generative AI data centers.
